Bedbugs are characterised as small blood-sucking insects that typically live within the cracks and crevices that are found in and around the bed. As the description implies, they feed on the blood of larger mammals, including humans, and are attracted by body heat and the carbon dioxide in our breath. They are active at night and crawl out to bite exposed skin and feed on blood. What makes matters worse is the fact that they can spread quickly and are difficult to treat.
To help them coordinate nesting locations, attacks, and reproduction, bedbugs use pheromones to communicate. When feeding, they pierce the skin of the host using two hollow feeding tubes – one to inject their saliva which contains an anaesthetic, and the other to feed on the host’s blood. Bedbugs can go for up to a year without feeding, though usually feed once every 5-10 days.
While it is possible for bedbug bites to spread disease, fortunately, this is quite rare here in the UK. The bites themselves are the main issue as they often cause discomfort. If multiple bites are received, an itchy rash or eczema can also develop.
It’s generally easy to spot bedbugs as an adult measures roughly 5mm in length and around 1.5-3mm wide. They have a flattened, oval-shaped body which is light brown in colour. If a bedbug has recently fed, its body will be darker and rounder. The best places to check for bedbugs are in the seams of mattresses, in the crevices of the bed frame, behind furniture surrounding the bed, or where the walls meet the floor.
Depending on the severity of the infestation, you may also notice dark staining on the mattress. This is caused by the bedbugs’ excreta. Bedbugs also secrete an unpleasant odour which will leave the room smelling musty and uninviting.
At Whelan Pest Prevention, we have a proven track record of dealing with bedbug infestations, regardless of the severity. While bedbugs are difficult to eradicate, our fully qualified and trained team of professionals are adept at ridding properties of these unwanted pests. While we can provide DIY products for smaller infestations, we always recommend leaving larger infestations to our professional team.
We understand the habits of bedbugs and know just where to look and where to apply our treatments to achieve maximum effectiveness. Our team employs a range of methods and treatments ensuring that any property is left bedbug-free.
In recent years, the UK has seen a sharp increase in bedbug numbers which has, in turn, had a knock-on effect with businesses throughout the leisure and tourism industry. What makes matters worse for hotel and B&B owners is the prevalence of smartphones, which makes it easier than ever for unhappy guests to report infestations across social media and review sites. In commercial properties, bedbugs are usually spread by luggage, second-hand furniture, and on clothing.
Once established, bedbug infestations can be difficult to get rid of. As such, it’s important to always call the professionals when bedbugs invade your commercial premises.
Our team are all fully accredited and members of various assessment schemes, so you can trust us to provide the best commercial service around. As well as employing the most effective insecticides around to eliminate any bedbug population, we also place products inside the various crevices and cracks. These products make these areas inhospitable to bedbugs helping to protect against future outbreaks.
We can also provide additional recommendations for proofing where applicable, as well as help to train your staff in ways to minimise the chance of another infestation occurring.
